quilter's new year's resolution

What do quilting retreats do for you? What does one gain from time and money spent for a retreat? To answer, first we’ll consider the obvious.

  • They give you time to finish projects that you never seem to have time for at home.
  • They let you escape for a while from the demands of a busy life.
  • And you get to have fun with your quilting friends.

I considered another benefit while reading a Bible devotion from Rick Warren; I felt the words could aptly apply to time at a retreat. At a retreat, you gain more enthusiasm, more energy, more passion for the art of quilting when you are surrounded by other quilters. Their encouragement produces personal growth in you as an artist. Most likely you will leave with new skills and confidence in your craft, while nurturing deeper friendships.

(Excerpt from Rick Warren): “When you spend time with God on a daily basis and you get plugged in to him, you can’t help but be passionate. You start to develop God’s heart for the world. You start to feel the way he does. That’s because you become like whoever you hang out with. Would you like to have more energy in life? More enthusiasm? More get-up-and-go? Let me tell you where to get it. The word “enthusiasm” comes from the Greek words en and theos—en meaning “in” and theos meaning “God.” When you get en theos, you’re going to be enthusiastic. The closer you get to God, the more energy, vitality, and passion you will have in life. The further away you get from God, the more bored and apathetic you become.”

I believe the idea of gaining enthusiasm, en theos, in life comes from getting closer to God.

I also believe you gain enthusiasm from spending time with other quilters. That’s because you become like whoever you hang out with. And quilters are great people to be around!
